Wind-driven rain is pushed sideways into porous brick and past flashing that would shed vertical rain fine. The fix is usually a combination of a wider cap, corrected flashing and a breathable water repellent on the masonry face.

My fireplace backdrafts on windy days. Is there a fix?

Yes. Depending on the cause we install a wind-directional or high-draft cap, adjust the flue height relative to the roofline, or add a make-up air source when the home is too tight.

Is sealing my chimney going to trap moisture inside?

Not if the right product is used. We only use vapor-permeable siloxane sealers that repel liquid water while letting the masonry dry outward. Paint and acrylic sealers do trap water and cause spalling — we never use them.
